Market Correction Underway and the Impact Upon the May Iron Condor Trade

Sometimes paying attention works. This weekend in our Weekly Market Report, we called a market correction. That doesn't mean that we predicted the sell-off that we saw yesterday and today, but it does mean that the selling was not unexpected. The current Weekly Market Report can be accessed from the "Learn" tab inside the Trading Room.

Today's sell-off on the Russell 2000 caused some serious potential problems for the May iron condor trade, forcing what I call a reactive adjustment on my part. The details of the entire adjustment process, including the trade philosophy behind it, is documented in the forum.

If you have questions about that trade, you are encouraged to make use of the forum and post them to the thread. I had also updated a post concerning risk management following Sunday night's presentation on the same subject. You are also encouraged to take part in that discussion.

Check your positions, make sure you are not exceeding maximum loss rules, and review your trade plans.

Christopher Smith
TheOptionClub, LLC

Video Re-Play from Last Night's Session

During yesterday's live training session we planned an Iron Condor trade on the RUT using the May '12 options. We talked about implied volatility, the fact that it is very low right now, and the risks inherent in selling short Vega trades like an iron condor when IV is low.

We also took a look at the use of calendar spreads and double calendar spreads, and how they might be used in conjunction with other positions such as our iron condor to help offset some of the short Vega risk.

The video re-play from yesterday's session is now on-line and will available for download for two-weeks. It is accessible form the "Learn" tab, above.

Christopher Smith
TheOptionClub, LLC

Video Re-PLay Posted and Steve Nison Presentation

There are a few items to draw your attention to this week.

STEVE NISON'S CANDLESTICK PRESENTATION TOMORROW

The Steve Nison is presentation is tomorrow, January 31, 2012, at 5:30 p.m. PT. Candlestick charts; we all use them. Most of us, myself included, do not use them properly. Steve Nison is THE candlestick expert. It should be a good presentation to catch, but we are expecting a very large audience and seating is limited, so register now.

Steve Nison Candlesticks Presentation

VIDEO REPLAY POSTED

The video re-play of our Feb. 29th session is available from the "Learn" tab. During that session we explored a possible trade set-up on Nuance Corp. (NUAN) and profiled multiple bullish trade constructions covering everything from a basic covered call and long call, to a call ratio back spread. That video will remain available to members for two weeks.

SPX IRON CONDOR UPDATED

Over the weekend I updated the forum thread on the February SPX iron condor. There is not a whole lot to report other than the fact that a GTC order is in place to close the put spread for a dime and the call ratio back spread component of the trade looks solid. I commented on the position a little during last night's presentation, so you can download that video if you like.

Today the market was down which has placed the trade in a good position. I have not placed an order to close the call ratio back spread but if the market stays a bit soft I may leave it in place to maximize returns this month.

Mind your risk and have a great week.

Christopher Smith
TheOptionClub, LLC

Steve Nison Live Event

On January 31, 2012, we are invited to attend a live web-cast event featuring Steve Nison, CMT. I imagine most of you here know who Steve Nison is, but for anyone who does not he is the man credited with bringing Japanese Candlesticks to the Western world. He is also regarded as one of the world's experts on their use for purposes of trading.

Just about every charting package now includes candlestick charts, but the vast majority of traders do not really know who to make use of hem from an analytic point of view. I include myself amongst that group.

So, on January 31st we are invited to join Steve Nison for a live presentation. He has extended this invitation to trading communities in addition to TheOptionClub.com, and expects to see a pretty good turnout. He has shared with me that as registrations come in that once all spots are claimed they will be closing the registration page down.

Register for the Steve Nison Event
January 31, 2012, at 5:30 p.m. P.T. (8:30 p.m. ET)

The registration page itself features a video and other information that will explain a bit more about what will be covered. Again, no cost to attend but I'm posting this now so that you can register while seats are available.

Christopher Smith
TheOptionClub.com

P.S. I know that I will be asked, so let me just post it here...

Because this event is open to several trading communities we are not using my presentation platform, so I will not be recording the event. I do not know what Steve Nison's plans are for recording or sharing an event recording. My recommendation is to register now, reserve your spot at the event, and do what you can to attend.

Probability of Profit Video Now On-Line

I was asked to record a video demonstrating how probability of profit can be determined using the TOS trading platform. That video as been added as a "mini-lesson" and can be access from the pull-down menu above. Select "Learn" and then choose the video from the "Mini-Lessons" sub-menu.

The video only runs a bit over 15 minutes, but I managed to cover a couple different scenarios for directional and non-directional trades. You might use this in conjunction with our Trader's Worksheet metrics when evaluating potential trades.

Questions should be directed to the member's forum. I hope you find it beneficial.

Christopher Smith
TheOptionClub, LLC

For those who were not able to download the weekly market report earlier, I made the necessary changes in the Download Library to address the problem. We do have a new format for that report with new information added and one or two items removed.

Download This Week's Market Report

I provided an overview during this evening's live Trade Along session and will have the video from that session uploaded once it has finished processing.

Also, to make life easier I have added a new link to the "Tools" tab that will provide direct access to the Weekly Market Report. I will update that link with the most current report. I will archive the past reports in the download library.

Christopher Smith
TheOptionClub, LLC

TOC Trading Room Trader's Spreadsheet

I just uploaded a new spreadsheet tool. This is a simple spreadsheet that I have been using for years with my accountant for tax reporting purposes. It allows you to record the opening and closing transaction for each trade. At the end of each year I review it to make sure it is accurate and then forward it along to my accountant who uses it to prepare my return.

It has been "dressed up" a bit, so that if you enter the starting capital in your account each year the spreadsheet will keep a running tally of your profits, losses, and portfolio yield. It is useful for even non-taxable accounts (e.g., IRA) in so far as it helps you enforce self-discipline and keeps you cognizant of your trading performance.

An instructional video will be added, shortly. As always, your constructive feedback and suggestions are appreciated and encouraged.

Christopher Smith
TheOptionClub, LLC
